Our resident historian is still working on the article(s) which will go in here. At the moment, he's dealing with finals for his students at the local college. So we'll start nudging him about this section once he gets grades turned in and catches his breath before he starts prepping for summer sessions!
In the meantime, here are some basic facts and figures to whet your appetite ...
4th Century AD - Knitted Socks are found in Egypt -- First 'frame' knitting machine invented in 1589, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. --Stocking frames were abundantly produced in the mid to late 18th century.
Hand knitting more than likely originated among the nomads of the Arabian Desert about 1000 BC. Knitting spread from Egypt to Spain, France and Italy. Knitting Guilds had been established in Paris and Florence in the 14th Century. Austria and Germany began producing heavily cabled and knotted fabrics decorated with brightly colored patterns, and the Netherlands began producing naturalistic patterns worked on fabric in reverse stocking stitch. Dutch knitters travelled to Denmark where they taught the Danish women the Dutch knitting skills. By the time the 16th century rolled around, the Jersey Islanders were prolific knitters and had mastered the finer points of the art.
